Cineca Consorzio Interuniversitario
Founded in 1969, CINECA is an interuniversity consortium bringing together over 120 member institutions, including the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR), the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM), all the public universities in Italy, and over 50 national public research institutions. It is one of Europe’s leading supercomputing centres and a key player in high-performance computing (HPC), supporting research, innovation, and digital transformation through advanced infrastructures, application development, and co-design activities. CINECA operates at the intersection of computing, science, and public service, delivering integrated solutions and services for academia, research, and public administration. Acting on behalf of MUR, it hosts and contributes to major European initiatives, including the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and participates in large-scale international projects such as ITER.
Role within QEC4QEA
Within the Quantum Excellence Centre for Quantum-Enhanced Applications (QEC4QEA), CINECA provides the high-performance computing infrastructure on which hybrid quantum-classical workflows are developed and run. By integrating quantum emulators and platforms with the EuroHPC Leonardo supercomputer, CINECA gives partners the resources to prototype and test these workflows at scale. CINECA also supports the wider uptake of quantum computing by providing access to emulation resources, contributing to training activities, and helping to build and share expertise across sectors such as finance, pharmaceuticals, and logistics.
